Gypsophila

The Gypsophila represents a plant which originates from Europe, Asia and also northern Africa and it’s used mainly as a decorative flower, as it resembles strikingly with the carnation. The plant belongs to a very rich genus of almost 100 species, all belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, commonly called the pink family or even the carnation family. The Caryophyllaceae family is amongst the most popular families in botany, as it comprises of almost 2000 species.

The Gypsophila usually grows in regions with soil rich in calcium or gypsum, the name of the Genus being now well justified. Even though the cultivation of the Gypsophila is not soil-pretentious, the flower does require an impressive amount of water to develop properly. Also, excessive sun can really damage the Gypsophila, and so the enthusiasts preoccupied with the cultivation process of this flower should be aware that excessive sun exposure can actually kill the plant.

Also known as the Baby’s Breath in the United States, the Gypsophila is regarded as a flower which symbolizes innocence and purity, a flower of the heart. The flower can grow up to 120 cm tall and represents the best filler for the floral arrangements, blooming on white or pink colors which can match almost any floral bouquet.

The flowers of this plant are made of 5 petals that usually vary in color from white to light pink shades and are usually used with decorative purposes. Although the Gypsophila can occur in the wild, being considered even invasive at times, the plant is also known to be amongst the most preferred flowers to grow in personal gardens, maybe just because of the fact that it gives that authentic wild look to a specially arranged garden. No matter the theme of your garden, the Gypsophila is a plant that goes with everything, adding that aspect of full and rich vegetation to your garden.

After the cutting of its stem, the flower has shown an amazing 10 days resistance before withering. This is one of the reasons florist appreciate the Gypsophila flower, because they can use it to produce complicated and creative floral arrangements celebrating weddings and special events, arrangements that should last in most cases more than 3 or 4 days.

Some of the most famous species of the Gypsophila genus include: the Gypsophila elegans, the Gypsophila paniculata, and the Gypsophila fastigiata, all species of incredible beauty and distinctiveness.
